In less than a week, the performing arts department will embark in going to DCA to play in front on judges. As you know, the South High School music department work very hard to put on performances at sporting events and concerts. Because of that, it’s only fair for them to showcase their skills and hard work to judges and other schools. DCA, which stands for District Common Assessments, is a contest where the bands, orchestras, or choirs play usually two pieces of music to get a rating from 1-4, 1 being the highest. They then cite read and play an easy piece of music that they have never seen before to show how well they follow their teachers instructions. They also get a rating on this. In the case that they receive 1 rating combined, they are able to go to DCA state, which is a higher status competition.
The honor of going to this event is tremendous. Having the opportunity to showcase a group of talented peoples hard work is exciting especially when you can see the distinct progress that was made compared to the beginning of the year. What is really impressive is that with the amount of snow days that we’ve had, the band and orchestra are still going to the contest, expected by themselves and their directors to get a high rating. The grit that you must have to be skilled enough to go this contest needs to congratulated.
***UPDATE***
Both the Orchestra and Varsity Band received all 1 ratings at their DCA Perfromances.
