I’m sure everybody has heard, Netflix released a series based on the popular novel by Jay Asher.
This show has recently received a lot of backlash due to a suicide prevention group, saying that the show “does more harm than good”.
Thirteen Reasons Why revolves around a 17-year-old girl in high school, Hannah Baker, who kills herself. Hannah leaves seven tapes containing the thirteen reasons why she ended her life.”There is a great concern that I have … that young people are going to overidentify with Hannah in the series, and we actually may see more suicides as a result of this television series,” said Dan Reidenberg, the executive director for Suicide Awareness Voices of Education, a nonprofit group with the mission of suicide prevention. This show does show the horrors of suicide, however, it also glorifies it.
