The Boneless by April Genevieve Tucholke

 

  • A group of Mercenary Girls that are in search of glory are hired to kill  quickly, quietly and mercifully. This group consists of Frey, Ovie, Juniper, and Runa who all work together to get the job done. Frey however is growing weary of the death trade and wants to do more with her journey and live a bigger life. When Frey hears of a beast who is unstoppable and has been tearing through a nearby town she sees it as her one way ticket to glory to get herself and her girls to bigger and better things.

 

 

A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi

  • A year after 9/11 the Muslim community were shunned and looked down upon as terrorist for the events that happened in 2001. It is especially hard for Shirin being a 16 year old muslim girl who is tired of being ridiculed and stereotyped in America. With the stares, degrading comments, and the physical attacks she gets from other people regarding her race she has put up walls between her and the world. To escape, Shirin listens to music and practices break-dancing with her brother to pass the time. Then she meets Ocean James and he shows interest in her that no one has before, because they judged her for who she is. It terrifies Shirin and she is worried about him breaking down her walls she has been keeping up so long.

  • With a drought sweeping through her neighborhood Alyssa and many others are told what to do and what not to do about their water supply in preparation for them to run out. When that day comes caous erupts with the fight for survival. Alyssa’s parents abandon her and her bother leaving them to fend for themselves and try to survive. One day they are told they need to leave their homes by the government because they are planning on mining the sacred hill their houses are located on. With their protest against it Korok and Anchita are part of a resistance against the government and their goal is to stop them from ruining their homes. When James’ boyfriend commits suicide no one questioned how it happened. With a track record of being a foster child and many false suicide attempts everyone thought it was of his own doing.  With Ash’s death, James realizes it doesnt add up quite right so he tries to find the one person who would know what happened, Elliot Ash’s brother. When James comes to find out Elliot has skipped town he becomes even more suspicious of Elliot’s sudden disappearance because innocent people don’t run.
