In theaters back on March 14th, Paramount Pictures produced an action-thriller called Novacaine. Directors Dan Berk and Robert Olsen put together an amazing dark comedy about a timid young man who doesn’t have the ability to feel physical pain. When the love of his life gets kidnapped, not only his condition can stop him. With an 81% on rotten tomatoes, opinions on the movie are surprisingly mixed. Some say that the jokes in the movie miss the mark completely but many also say that the graphic novel aspect of it is fun and nostalgic.
While yes, the movie gives off a vibe of every movie in the 21st century, the cartoonish/ graphic novel aesthetic is fun like many have been saying. It adds to the plot very well, giving it a superhero comic feeling which is popular nowadays. Some of the jokes miss the mark like some of the reviews say, but to say the movie is ridiculous and unfunny is such a cynical thing to say. In the theatre. The jokes have caused a couple of chuckles and it’s a great start to the movies of 2025.
