Is too Much Caffeine Affecting High Schoolers?

Everyone knows high schoolers love coffee and energy drinks. But are their reasons for drinking them worth the negative side effects?

High schoolers love their caffeine because it helps them stay awake in class after a long night of going to practice, doing homework, and/or gaming. If you walk into any first period class, you’re likely to see at least one person with a cup of coffee or an energy drink. Many students develop a habit of drinking caffeine and pretty soon, can’t go a full day without it without feeling tired or anxious.

Starbucks is associated with teen girls because of how much coffee (and other things) they buy from there. Sometimes the drinks are just bought for a cute snap story, or because someone received a gift card. Other people face the allure of “stars” on the Starbucks app which can be redeemed for free items. Most coffee shops even offer a variety of seasonal items to attract more attention. Whatever someone’s reasoning is, it is a fact that teenagers spend a ton of money on caffeine.

Some of the negative side effects of ingesting too much caffeine include anxiety, irregular heartbeat, and increased blood pressure. While they are short-term effects, constant consumption converts them to long-term. Visible effects include yellowed teeth and eye-whites as well as eye bags from an altered sleep schedule.

A good way to lay off the coffee and energy drinks is to exercise for natural energy and beginning a healthy sleep schedule. Leading a healthy.
