Misconceptions About Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects less than one percent of people in the U.S. When someone has schizophrenia, symptoms can include:

  • Delusions
  • Hallucinations
  • Disorganized speech
  • Trouble with thinking
  • Lack of motivation

Schizophrenia is well known, but there are many misconceptions about it including the most common one which is, if you have schizophrenia you have split personalities. A split personality is extraordinarily rare and quite different from schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a thought disorder but there is a breakdown, or split, between thoughts, emotions, and behavior.

Another misconception about schizophrenia is that people with this disorder are likely to be violent. It’s actually rare for someone with schizophrenia to be violent but medication and counseling can help with any signs of violent behavior.
