Coping Mechanisms For Kids
Children deal with big emotions that they sometimes don’t understand. This can be super frustrating for them and often times they lash out or shut down. By teaching and modeling how we work through our emotions we can help them do the same. Give children the time and space to sort through their emotions but also provide help when needed.
Some coping mechanisms for children include:
- Deep breathing
- Talking to a trusted person
- Taking a bath
- Watching a funny video/movie
- Writing about what happened
- Playing with a pet
- Positive talk

Teaching kids healthy coping mechanisms helps them face their fears, calm themselves down, and cheer themselves up! Without healthy coping mechanisms, kids are likely to act out and grow up not understanding their emotions.
