As a new season is prepared to commence starting with free agency, many teams are looking for a new person to be under center. In what appears to be one of the weaker drafts in terms of quarterback talent, many teams have opted to shop around the league for their quarterback. Here are the teams that have gotten a deal done already, and some that are still searching.
Buccaneers: Tom Brady
And just like that, the phenom returns. In a short lived retirement for the veteran quarterback, the Buccaneers were possibly looking to find someone who could fill the gap that Brady made after they lost to the Rams in the playoffs. They will have to search no more, as Brady decided that it’s not over yet, he wants to try to continue to add to his illustrious trophy case.
Broncos: Russell Wilson
A blockbuster trade that shakes up both teams from the deal, the Broncos acquired their best quarterback since Manning, one who beat Manning in the super bowl nevertheless. Russell Wilson and the Seahawks said that they were on good terms before this trade, but two mediocre seasons and a disgruntled Russell Wilson a few years back saying he’d be interested in leaving, it was only a matter of time until they shipped him off. The Broncos gave up a few picks, Drew Lock, and Noah Fant in return of the star quarterback. Many say that the only thing the Broncos needed was a quarterback, and they got a quality one in Wilson.
Steelers: Mitchell Trubisky
One time Pro-Bowler Mitchell Trubisky, who was previously the backup for the Buffalo Bills, is heading to Pittsburgh. With Ben Roethlisberger retiring after last season, the Steelers were shopping for someone to fill the starter role. Mitchell Trubisky probably wasn’t their first option, but they are willing to give the 2nd pick QB a try. Their betting odds went lower though, they dropped from 5500 to 7000 after the acquisition. Trubisky will be looking to prove his doubters wrong with his new team.
Commanders: Carson Wentz
New name, new quarterback. Carson Wentz spent the first 5 years with the Eagles, watching his team win a super bowl while he was injured in a potential MVP season. He didn’t come back to this form for the Eagles, who traded him to the Colts for picks in the draft. The Wentz experiment looked fine in the beginning, but it collapsed near the end, losing the game to make the playoffs against the struggling Jaguars. A common criticism of Wentz is that he is very reckless at times, refusing to throw the ball away, believing he can somehow salvage every play. Maybe that’s what the Commanders need though, as they look to revitalize their team.
Colts: Matt Ryan
The Colts acquired former MVP Matt Ryan from the Falcons for a 3rd round pick, closing the book on the QB hunt for Indianapolis. Matt Ryan hasn’t had the prettiest years since the historic Super Bowl he was apart of, but he might’ve just needed a change of scenery. The Colts are ready to play for the Super Bowl, many inside the organization believing they just needed a new man under center.
Browns: Deshaun Watson
The Cleveland Browns acquired Deshaun Watson, giving up 3 first round picks, including the 13th this year, 2 4th round picks, and a third round pick. This trade puts an end to Baker Mayfields career for the Browns, now looking for a team to trade for him. Deshaun certainly has the talent, but there are skepticisms on if this was smart for Cleveland. A new contract means that Deshaun Watson will be making 230 million over 5 years, all guaranteed. This is the richest guarantee ever. He also faces suspension for his civil suits, which made him sit out all of last season. This is also the first time a player has been traded for 3 first round picks since Herschel Walker in 1989, which didn’t work out well for the Vikings. Watson hopes to prove some of the doubters wrong and start anew with the Browns franchise
