Andrew Tate’s Impact on Young Men
Andrew Tate is an American-British social media personality and retired kickboxer that has gained traction in the last three months. He participates in a podcast with several other men, which is where he spreads harmful rhetoric. This rhetoric has been criticized by many and even got Tate banned from Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube.
Clips of his podcast make their round and get millions of views on the social media app ‘TikTok’, making it easy for young teens to stumble across it. These clips show Tate discussing hitting women, men needing authority over women, and claiming that female rape victims must bare some responsibility. Those comments only being the tip of the iceberg as he is spreading much more dangerous and crude comments and suggestions about women. Tate’s content is widely sought out by young men proven by his recent growth on the internet. His account grew from 70,000 to 100,000 every day mid august and by gaining nearly 4 million Instagram followers in just two months.
Controversy isn’t new to Tate though, in 2016 he was kicked off the reality show “Big Brother” after a clip shown of his striking a woman with a belt surfaced. After Tate moved to Romania, he said that the relaxed sexual assault laws were “40% of the reason” he moved to the country. In April of 2022, his home in Romania was raided as a part of a Human-Trafficking investigation under the claims that there was a woman being held at Tates home. He has yet to be charged or arrested with any charge.
Tate even has his own website that offers paid membership and courses. Hustler’s University as he called it, promised fans to earn thousands of dollars. In this program, members could earn commission by signing up new members and encouraged them to post videos of Tate, which is a factor in his rise to internet fame. The membership is $42 a month and has 109,000 members as of last month.
Social Media platforms are taking more action against his content and many accounts are being banned. TikTok said: “Misogyny is a hateful ideology that is not tolerated on TikTok. We’ve been removing violative videos and accounts for weeks, and we welcome the news that other platforms are also taking action against this individual.” Instagram and Facebook have banned his official accounts, with more actions being taken his exposure to young teens should lessen. The harmful rhetoric being spread affects millions of people and should not be taken lightly.
