American Football History

Let’s go to the beginning where it all started, it first originated in the United States. Football would get there inspiration from Rugby and Soccer.

The first game of football was well over 200 years ago, November 6, 1869, It was between Rutgers and Princeton. At the time the rules of football were based on Soccer. The rules were soon to change in 1880 by Walter Camp. He had a nickname, “Father of American Football”, he would also change the shape of the football to an oval shape.

Football started to grow in size of viewership and watch time, 37% of adults in the United States put American football as their favorite sport, It is the most popular sport in the United States. Fast forward years later, there was a rivalry between NFL and the American Football League, but they would later merge together with 32 teams.

They would host the first Superbowl, on January 15, 1967 with the winning team holding up the Lombardi trophy, which is named after Vince Lombardi. The first Superbowl was between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Green Bay Packers. It would be held in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. There have now been 56 Superbowl’s.
