Recently, Lizzo has gotten herself into a controversy with her backup dancers. Backup dancers, Ariana Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noella Rodriguez have sued Lizzo for many accusations, the accusations being; racism, body shaming, religious and disease discrimination, sexual harassment, abuse of power- and somehow more. The famous singer whose brand is all about female empowerment and body positivity was sued by her backup dancers for the very opposite of that.. but is it true?
The dancers say that on a tour Lizzo invited them to a nude performance. Scared of losing their jobs they agreed. The lawsuit claims that while they were performing with Lizzo, she began chanting to get Davis -backup dancer- to touch one of the other performers inappropriately. Lizzo says these are just sensationalized stories and denies the assault and body shaming that allegedly took place. Some celebrities have addressed Lizzo’s allegations. Jersey Shore star and actress Jennifer Garner liked Lizzo’s post saying “This will be a bloop soon enough.”
More celebrities like Noah Schnapp, Charli, and Chelsea Handler also support Lizzo. This lawsuit was filed on August 1st and she hasn’t been found completely innocent- even now. The only update being her denial of it and many celebrities backing her up. The dancers claim that Lizzo would shame them for gaining weight even though she knew the dancer struggled with anxiety and depression which caused her to stress eat. Lizzo says false, as she said “I know what it feels like to be body shamed on a daily basis and would absolutely never criticize or terminate an employee because of their weight.”
They also accused the dance captain – Quigley – of shaming the staff if they didn’t have the same beliefs as her. She also would regularly overshare about her private life which involved inappropriate acts. Davis said she shared with Quigley that she was still a virgin and the dance instructor decided to broadcast the information on social media without Davis’s permission. They also claimed that the team would treat black members differently than the rest of the dance team. The dancers reacted to her claims, saying it her lack of empathy about the subject shows a lot about her character and did more harm than good. The rest of her dance team has stayed silent, only posting to praise Lizzo and saying how grateful they were to work with her.
Despite all the claims and stories people have spun about whether the dancers were lying or not or if Lizzo really did the things that she’s been accused of, there’s been no set-in-stone answer if it’s true or false. some people say that the dancers have come out and said that it was a lie but there’s has been no proof of that. The only story we have is the one the dancers have spun and the one Lizzo has addressed.
