Over about a week and three lunch periods I interviewed both 75 students and 25 teachers to figure out the essential question of “what is south highs favorite music genres?”. I interviewed lots of different students and teachers combined, making sure to get the places I didn’t often visit in the building to make sure I got every different hallway and opinion I could cover. I had gotten a lot of different answers, some great… some not so much. Overall, the wonderful answers I had received, these seemed to be the ten that stuck out in the crowd and got the most praise and picks.
10. INDIE
Indie is a genre that became popular in the mid-2000s and stands for independent music and the spirit of artists’ freedom, where artist release music outside of the control of major record labels. Some examples of indie are Mitski, Hozier, Chappell roan, Weezer, Kate bush, Tame Impala, Alex G, Big Thief, and Clairo.
9. HIP-HOP
Hip-Hop became popular in the 70s with the cultural movements in New York and is a cultural itself and shows the struggles, experiences, and aspirations of the artist. Some examples of hip-hop are Nicki Minaj, Drake, Cardi B, Pitbull, Q-tip, Wu-tang clan, A$AP Rocky, and Rick Ross.
8. JAZZ
Jazz is a genre that originated with the African American communities in New Orleans in the late 19th and early 20th century that took from multiple different genres like blues, ragtime, and European harmony. Some examples of jazz are frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Oscar Brown, Ron Carter, Art Pepper, J.J Johnson, Elvin Jones, and George Benson.
7. KPOP
K-pop started in South Korea and has gained massive popularity since it was introduced in the 1990’s. K-pop essentially means Korean popular music and blends genres like pop, hip-hop, R&B, and electric music along with amazing visual effects and chorography. Some examples are groups like BTS, Black pink, Katseye, Twice, stray kids, Super Junior, and Seventeen.
6. RAP
Rap is a type of singing style that flows with a beat and often includes rhyming that tells a story and has social and personal reflection, it’s often included in hip-hop and other upbeat genres. Some examples of rap are 50 cent, jay-z, Eminem, Lil Wayne, snoop dogg, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, and ice cube.
5. METAL
Metal is a form of rock that is characterized by being loud, having powerful and deep drumming, and guitar solos. The genre metal has a lot of sub-genres and incorporates different genres into its songs. Some examples are limp bizkit, Metallica, Soad. Iron maiden, slipknot, Korn, Deftones, Ozzy Osbourne, and Pantera.
4. R&B
R&B stands for rhythm and blues and started in the 1940s when it evolved from jazz and blues and over time has incorporated other genres like soul, funk, and hip hop over time. Some examples are Usher, Chris brown, Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Frank ocean, Whitney Houston, Prince, Diana Ross, and Michael Jackson.
3.POP
Pop has a wide range of music and is distributed to a wide audience along with a commercial. Pop music is often characterized by strong rhythms, catchy melody, and to have memorable choruses in their songs. Some examples are Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus, Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Bad Bunny, Tate McRae, Shakira, Shawn Mendes, and David Bowie
2.COUNTRY
Country is a genre popular in America that started in the Rural, South and West that draws from older genres like folk songs, blues and tells stories primarily about love, loss, and everyday life. Some examples are Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Luke Bryan, Carrie underwood, Jonny cash, George strait, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks, and Dolly Parton.
1.ROCK
Rock or also known as rock and roll is a very popular genre that takes from a lot of African-American genres like the blues, jazz, gospel and as well as others like country. Rock started started in the 1940s and 1950s and is characterized as energetic music. Some examples are Pink Floyd, Queen, Nirvana, Fleetwood mac, Journey, Aerosmith, AC/DC, The Doors, Queen, Guns N’ Roses, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Eagles, and The Beatles.
