There are many things that somebody will look for in a friend, and one of those things is good self-esteem. Self esteem is your confidence in your worth or abilities, meaning your confidence in yourself. To have good self esteem, you need to have self respect, which really just defines itself. There are many ways that these two work together, but there are also many differences.
According to pschologytoday.com, to esteem something is to value it’s worth, where as to respect something, is to accept it. But respect is really a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities or achievements. To value your worth correctly, you have to accept who you are as a person, and changes the things that you think would make that hard for you.
Start with the pictures that you take. If other people are going to see them, cover up a little. This shows that you’re confident with who you are with out having to show off everything you’ve got. Girls, this means pulling up your shirt a little, and guys, stop sagging, and maybe wear a shirt. This goes for your everyday life as well. Not only will you have more respect for yourself , but other people will as well.
Another way to respect yourself is in the way you talk. I know this doesn’t sound like it’s true but using proper grammar and a wider vocabulary makes you sound intelligent, and I don’t know about you but I’m really happy with myself when I sound intelligent. Same goes for Racial slurs, even if it’s words for your own race. If you use words like that, it’s almost like you’re giving other people permission to use them as well.
The way you act can affect you as well. Have confidence, but not attitude. Hold your head high, but don’t act like you’re better than others. Don’t look down your nose at people. That’s opening you up to criticism.
In short, treat yourself with respect, and others will. If others do, then your self-esteem will go up. Cover up, use proper grammar, have confidence and kick attitude out of your life. I’m sure that you will be pleased with the results. Not only will you respect yourself more, but others will too, both equally important. So try these simple things, and I’m sure you won’t regret it.
