In the first couple weeks of 2025, the internet has broken over the government’s threat to ban one of the most popular apps in the United States, TikTok. The flourishing app, released in September of 2016 has been threatened at least three times for it to be banned over the last nine years, so, what’s so different and ground breaking about this one, and why people feeling so strongly about it than ever before? The ban was first proposed on Dec. 6th, 2024 by the federal court. It was claimed that the app would be still be able to be used but would be non-downloadable on app stores by Jan. 19th, 2025. This has caused an uproar in younger generations for multiple reasons. People are angry, confused, and emotional by the death of the beloved app that has made so many opportunities for many people. Although we’ve heard many opinions about it, let’s get local and see how South is feeling:
“The TikTok ban is a bittersweet situation. It’s unfortunate for many people who used this platform to grow and connect from their interests and personal businesses. Due to this ban, many will need to rebuild their platform after a tremendous loss. However, the ban may open possibilities to grow in all sorts of ways like focusing on academics or strengthen relationships around your own circle. It really depends on how we view it.”
“I don’t think TikTok is going to be banned. Shutting down the app has been a threat so many times that I dont believe it anymore.”
“I honestly don’t care. I never had TikTok, and I never had any interest in getting it. It really only caused drama and some of the trends really caused problems. I just hope it means people will stop recording TikToks in the middle of the hallway”
“I feel upset because I spend a lot of time watching videos and I have many saved videos that I love!”
“I feel like the government cares more about controlling how people thing and less about data stealing. Meta & Google have been stealing data for years, the only difference is tiktok isn’t an american company”
“The explanation for the TikTok ban makes no sense to me. It just fells like an excuse to get costumers to American apps.”
“Absolutley wrong”
“Horrible”
