On Friday, August 22nd, 2025, the class of 26′ celebrated the start of their final year of high school. Every year, the seniors of South High School have a gathering at Carpenter Stadium. Many came with posters, blankets, treats, and anything that they could to savor this moment. This is a very special event as it allows the seniors to watch the sunrise with their fellow graduating classmates. We had over 150 seniors gather for this special ceremony, along with a handful of staff.
Mrs. Matlock, one of South Highs’ excellent staff, says this tradition is important to the school community because “it brings students together and allows them to have fun with their friends, and that’s part of being in school…” She goes on to say, “…and I think everything that we can do as a staff to help support the comradery that students have together is a really good thing.” The staff of South High brung breakfast, snacks, and juice to add the celebration.
As the sun rose, so did the students. Spirits lifted, filled by a foreshadow of new beginnings. The past now behind them, and the future in their grasp. Jazmine Jontra one of the excelling seniors at South High described it as “…an experience you get once but a memory you get to keep forever.” Leaving the stadium, you felt warm; smiles, laughter, and joy every way you turn. A bittersweet scent passing in the air but only the future in view.
