K-HOT!: Hot Comebacks & Debuts!: Red Velvet’s “The Red – The 1st Album”
Following a successful comeback early March 2015 with the debut-EP, The 1st Mini Album ‘Ice Cream Cake’ – EP (and addition of a 5th member, Yeri), Red Velvet goes for the gold, or shall I say ‘red’, with their new debut full-length studio album, The Red – The 1st Album. Released September 9th, 2015 worldwide, the LP was met with both Korean and Chinese recognition as well as, worldwide recognition coming in at No. 1 on Billboard‘s “World Albums” chart and No. 24 on the “Heatseekers Albums” chart (less common for K-Pop groups). The lead single or “title track” of the LP, “Dumb Dumb” has garnered a total of 7,617,422 views on YouTube (as of September 19th, 2015) and is ranked No. 2 on Gaon Music Chart‘s “Digital Chart” while the album itself ranked No. 1 on Gaon‘s “Album Chart”. The group and single have also gone on to win 3 awards on South Korean music television programs, such as: “The Show” (September 15th), “Show Champion” (September 16th) & “M! Countdown” (September 17th).
History:
Prior to releasing the album, the group itself (consisting of only four members: Irene, Seulgi, Wendy & Joy) debuted August 2014 under (S.M. Entertainment) with the single, “Happiness” (a personal favorite of mine). The follow-up single, a cover, “Be Natural” (ft. Taeyong of SR14B) was released October 2014. The two singles themselves were both meant to represent the two different “sides” or concepts of the group, the Red side (“Happiness”) and the Velvet-y side (“Be Natural”). It wasn’t until March 17th, 2015, with the addition of fifth member Yeri, did we actually get an album-effort from the group with the release of The 1st Mini Album ‘Ice Cream Cake’ – EP preceded by the two title tracks, the very emotional and moody “Automatic” (March 13th) and the highly-infectious and bubbly “Ice Cream Cake” (March 15th). Met with critical acclaim, the mini album debuted at No. 1 on Gaon‘s “Album Chart”, No. 2 on Billboard‘s “World Albums” chart and eventually No. 25 on Billboard‘s “Heatseekers Albums” chart. The single, “Ice Cream Cake” debuted at No. 4 on Gaon‘s “Singles Chart”, No. 3 on Billboard‘s “World Digital Songs” chart and most-viewed K-pop video in the world (including America) for the month of March, with “Automatic” falling in at No. 32 (Gaon) and No. 6 (South Korea) and No. 4 (America) in most-viewed K-pop video for the month.
