2022’s best music, television, and movies! awarded and praised throughout the past few months. Award show season is a time usually contained within the last few months of the previous year and first 3 months of a new year where critics assess media released in the previous year. Award show season is known best by major programs like The Oscars, The Grammys, The Emmys, and many more. There are many other programs like the SAG awards, the Golden Globes, the Kids Choice Awards, and countless others give a much larger view on pop culture consumption in the U.S. But lets assess the choices of these critics from the past few months.
Everything Everywhere All at Once sweeps award season: Everything Everywhere All at Once did outstanding with a surprising 7 Academy Awards in most major categories. Michelle Yeoh won best actress, Key Huy Quan won best supporting actor, Jamie Lee Curtis won best supporting actress, The Daniels won best director(s), and finally the film itself won best picture. The film also won so many awards from other programs and critics that Everything Everywhere All at Once has overtaken Lord of the Rings: Return of the King as most awarded movie ever. Return of the King previously was 213 awards from critics and Everything Everywhere All at Once has won 336. This is a major achievement for indie film and their studio A24.
Viola Davis reaches EGOT status: Acclaimed actress Viola Davis has had a prolific career and is officially the 18th person in history to reach EGOT status. EGOT status is winning an award from the Emmys (TV), Grammys (Music), Oscars (Movies), and Tony’s (Theatre). Viola Davis is a 4 time Academy winner in the best supporting actress and best actress categories. Davis is also a multiple time award winner at the Emmys in the lead actress category. All that along with her multiple Tony wins for the categories of featured actress and lead actress. Most recently was her Grammy win for the spoken word album category. Viola Davis is one of the handful of people of color to achieve this special status.
Legendary Comebacks: This awards season saw the return of industry legends and fan favorites.
Brendan Fraser was on top of the world and was one of America’s favorite action stars after his role in The Mummy. He had a successful career in the 90s-00s but the success ended due to some major complications. Fraser made the decision to leave acting due to a couple reasons, one of which was his numerous amounts of surgeries he had to receive because of the injuries he garnered on set. Some injuries as serious as a knee replacement and corrective surgery on his spine. His divorce from ex-wife Afton Smith also played a factor but not as much as the black-listing he received. Fraser was black-listed from Hollywood because of an incident with Philip Berk, former president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Berk, at a HFPA luncheon, sexually assaulted Fraser and reportedly groped the actor then black-listed him and ruined his chances of a career. This all changed once Director Darren Aronofsky gave Fraser another chance at a career. Aronofsky known for films like Black Swan and Mother was embarking on his new movie titled The Whale where Fraser was casted as leading man. The film quickly gathered awards everywhere and then the Oscar nomination came. When the awards arrived Fraser was announced winner for Best actor in a lead role and officially came back. Fraser was also casted and set to star in Warner Bro’s Batgirl film as main antagonist Firefly but the film was scrapped and vaulted.
Another actor who made their legendary comeback was actor Key Huy Quan. Child star in movies like The Goonies, and Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom, Quan was a popular sight but quickly faded from the spotlight. Quan contributed his disappearance from the main stage as not being able to find work. Quan stayed in Hollywood as a stunt man and stunt coordinator. But the actor came back with his role as Waymond Wang in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Quan has shown his infectiously positive attitude through his acting, interviews, and his award speeches. Quan helped Everything Everywhere All at Once win its several Oscars by winning best supporting actor. Through his resurgence of popularity he has even reunited with former friend and mentor, Harrison Ford. Quan is set to act in Disney’s adaptation of the book, American Born Chinese.
