Often times it feels like romantic comedies or “rom-coms” are a dying art. But there are a number of films that I think will stand the test of time. And there are many which have genuinely surprised me, so here is my list of the top 5 best rom-coms.
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days – To say this movie is perfect would be an understatement. You’d only find leads called Andie Anderson and Benjamin Barry in the rom-com to end all rom-coms. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days is just a fluffy as it sounds right from the start. A movie about a cool girl who has an unbreakable chemistry with a slightly chauvinistic man’s man, even though their chance at love is doomed from the beginning.
Andie is in charge of the “How to” column at her workplace where she’s works as a journalist although she is not satisfied, she made a deal with her boss that if she was able to make a “How to” for entangling a man and torture him with headaches until he breaks up with her within 10 days, she would be able to write about whatever she desires like politics. Benjamin on the other hand has his own little thing going on where her is attempting to demonstrate his ability to win over any women to get the upper hand in his job.
Crazy, Stupid, Love- This movie lives up to its title because it’s about all the dynamics of love; some crazy, some stupid, all love. After losing his wife to divorce, a man looks within, in the hopes of discovering love once more. Then he meets a womanizer who tries to instill in him the confidence he desperately needs to go back on track. However, a string of amusing miscommunications causes strain in his life that he must resolve on his own.
A celebrity-filled ensemble comedy about your own and other people’s interpretations of love. This comedy will make you fall in love because it has both heartfelt and humorous parts.
10 Things I Hate About You– Whoever claimed that teen films were a step up is delusional. Bianca, The younger Stratford sister, can only go on a date with guy if her older sister also has a date. The father being extremely protective, goes through with this plan. Therefore, the disobedient Patrick Verona is paid by the guy that’s wanting to take Bianca out to woo Kat, and as a result of “the shrew’s taming”, it inevitably develops into something genuine.
The film expertly combines Shakespearean themes with a modernized plot to appeal to a wide audience. The casting superbly enhances the captivating story. In the same way that the late Heath Ledger portrays Patrick’s attraction seductively, Julia Stiles gives Kat a convincing and heroic voice. Finally, the movie expertly sets up the conclusion, guaranteeing that viewers will be enthralled every time they re-watch it. Simply put it’s a masterpiece.
When Harry Met Sally– Harry Burns played by Billy Crystal and Sally Albright played by Meg Ryan did a wonderful job playing these characters although they had amazing chemistry and got along with each other perfectly in real life you can’t say the same about their characters. Harry and Sally didn’t get along well at first because of Harry’s directness and sarcasm, which didn’t sit well with Sally’s proper high maintenance nature.
The two argue nearly every time they encounter one other for over a decade or so. Their arguments become more amicable to the point where they become friends. But Harry maintains that true friendships are impossible for men and women. While they dance around each other and set each other up with their friends it takes them a long time to realize their love for one another. But Harry and Sally succeed in it making for one of the greatest romantic comedy duos ever.
You’ve Got Mail- When you want to feel warm and content on the inside, this 1998 flick is yours. Tom Hanks plays Joe Fox, and Meg Ryan plays Kathleen Kelly. When his corporate bookshop moves in and crushes her tiny one, it takes aways her job. The pair’s emails alone make the movie worthwhile to watch because they develop feelings for one another through anonymous emails which only deepens the story’s complexity.
If that is still not enough to persuade you, the movie is carried along by a deliberate, steady rhythm that lets viewers immerse themselves in its enthralling universe and make effective use of the foes to lover cliche. Plus, the chemistry between Ryan and Hanks! One could even argue that the story’s charm is evocative of the well-known.
