Have you ever seen a movie or a show and were left confused? Like no explanation at all? Well, I have and that was with the movie, I’m thinking about ending things. I remember watching it years ago and I still don’t understand it. Let us dive into what this movie was even about!
The movie is about a young woman who soon finds herself with misgivings after traveling with her new boyfriend to his parents’ secluded farm. It starts off fine but sets the tone with an uncanny and eerie feeling, that feeling never goes away. The more the movie goes on the more unsettling and weird it gets.
“The film builds tension through uncanny scenes that offer a hollow, sinister mimicry of reality, and its unassuming setting makes its dark subject matter all the more horrifying.” (https://thelowell.org/)
Throughout the movie their are many strange and unusual scenes. The movie, remaining somewhat “real”.
WARNING, beyond this point you can expect spoilers.
During the middle to the end of the movie there were scenes of a janitor in a school, but that janitor didn’t play a role in the main story, or did he? The janitor would just appear and seem to be imagining things. Almost as if he did play a role? The movie never really explained anything, which left many confused.
The movie was really about a janitor dealing with mental health issues, daydreaming of a life with a woman and a family he didn’t have. He was struggling with suicide, hence the title “I’m thinking of ending things”. Some people will say he was struggling with schizophrenia.
This movie touches on strong subjects that may be difficult for some. There is a book, and that is where most of the information came from as it explained more in detail about what was truly happening. This is one of those movies where you should probably read the book before watching or you’ll be confused. In the book, the janitor did commit suicide, but not in the movie. A lot of what was in the book was never shown in the movie at all.
